You're probably thinking to yourself, this Alicia is wacky; how can Chloe participate in a summer reading program? Welllll, for every 15 minutes that I read to Chloe, we mark off a box in her reading booklet. After 12 boxes are checked, Chloe gets a prize for the week. (If you're doing the math in your head right now, I'll help you - that comes out as 3 hours of reading a week.) So far the prizes have been mostly coupons to dairy queen or mcdonald's. It's been nice to have those little treats during the summer and we make it a family outing to use a coupon. Also, the investment of reading to Chloe so much this summer is invaluable!
Since Chloe will be 2 next month, I've put her in the 2 yr. old summer story time to get her used to it for the fall. The teacher does lots of interactive singing and action rhymes with the large group of kids. She also reads a few stories and blows bubbles at the end. At home and in the car we sing the story time songs so Chloe is prepared to fully enjoy them at the library. Since she's younger than most of the other kids, I like her to feel confident about what to expect.

Oh how fun! I loved your duet:). Not having a car makes it a little tricky to do library outings but perhaps one day we will. It would probably help Michael adjust to other children his age. I did sign him up for the free book every month. He LOVES books for which I am so thankful. All the research out there points to how valuable reading to your child is. I think that it fosters more than an interest in reading though. I am not an expert but I am an advocate of reading to your child from day 1:). We don't let Michael watch a lot of T.V./videos. Like you, we do 30 minutes at a time, if at all. It's usually Baby Einstein or Winnie the Pooh.
I've just started to let him watch the Andy Griffith show sometimes. He loves Aunt Bea and "Dupie" (Opie). We'll sit there with him and tell him what's going on - it's kind of cute.

Yes we participate in the library all year long - every thursday morning and we get 10-20 books each week for the boys and read each of them numerous times. We have gotten coupons to Toco Bell, Popeyes, and McDonalds then this week Caleb's name was picked for the weekly drawing (I will find out Thursday what he won) plus we entered him in the final drawing for a new bike! The story time is fun with 3-4 books, rymes, and songs!
Our library is doing the summer reading contest also for adults and for kids. When Esther completes her chart (of me reading to her she gets a prize. I love the library too!
Wow, what awesome library programs!! I love our small town library, but they don't have anything like that for little ones. I think they have a summer reading program for older children, though. That is so cool how you get coupons and other prizes for reading to Chloe! We read a LOT around here too. :) I am so happy to see my kids learning to love books and the library, just like I did when I was little (well, I still do). :)
We go to story time at the library every Wednesday morning year round, but we especially enjoy the summer reading program. This year they have free kids meals to Chili's and Cracker Barrel..so I have neglected to inform the boys that there is a choice between that or little trinkets! =) They have enjoyed sharing a kids meal when we go out, because usually they just eat off our plates, so I guess it's not a totally bum deal for them. I love reading! (and they do too)
I love storytime. Chloe looks adorable singing the song w/ the actions.
Unfortunately our library requires kids to be 4 before they can attend the storytime, and in the summer they have to have finished kindergarten. But we read to our kids all the time, and JA just started a Children's Bible story hour once a week at church and of course toddlers are encouraged (hmm I wonder if our kids had anything to do with it). Anyways, I'm excited about that and praying we'll start having more kids coming soon.
Our library only has story time in the spring and fall. :( They do have a summer reading program though. Thanks for sharing and now, therefore, motivating me to get cracking on that! :) I don't know if our library gives out prizes, I think you might get put into a drawing or something.
