Chloe is currently suffering from a urinary tract infection. Poor girl!
My grandma arrived for a weekend visit on Thursday night and Chloe's troubles started on Friday. We spent Friday at home since the snowy sidewalks and chilly weather made a walk to the gym impossible. In a period of 3 hours Chloe had FOUR potty accidents. FOUR! That's unheard of for her. My first thought was that Chloe was regressing since Nana was here and getting my attention.
After more and more and MORE accidents Saturday through Monday, the thought finally struck Matt that Chloe might have a UTI. Neither of us have ever had one so we weren't sure what to look for. The diagnosis seemed to make sense and when I called my trusty mommy friend, Dr. Melinda (she's not a pediatrician but she should be since she's had so much experience with her six munchkins), and she said UTI right away.
A quick urine test (it was an interesting experience getting a urine sample from Chloe) at the doctor's office confirmed the UTI and now Chloe is on antibiotics and lots of cranberry juice. I feel AWFUL that we didn't see the signs until four days after the symptoms started! I suppose that's all par for the parenting course.
Today I indulged Chloe a bit (a way to ease my mommy guilt) and let her wear her pjs all day long. She also got to watch Piglet's Big Movie (her recent favorite), eat pizza for lunch, play with some new play-doh, and read lots of books with me.
I'm fairly certain Chloe acquired the UTI because of bad wiping practices after going potty. Toilet paper just doesn't do the trick so I'm switching to wipes or a washcloth. The most surprising thing I've learned through this experience is in regards to bubble bath. I mean, hello, all toddlers like playing in bubble bath. Who knew it would be a leading cause of UTI's?
Have your kiddos ever had a UTI? How long did it take to go away?

I can't remember if Sara's was a bladder infection or a UTI, they are different I learned, but she has had one of them and she got it so young they considered doing a bladder ultrasound which would have meant a catheter--thankfully they decided against it for the time being and said if it became a re-occuring problem they would do one. On another note, I am "teased" by my sister and a good friend of mine that my kids get illnesses they have never even heard of before!! We must just be prone to out of the ordinary "issues". Hope that clears up soon!
none of my kids have had a uti, but I remember having one as a kid and also a ban on bubble baths from my mom - so my girls have never taken a bubble bath. And, I'm guilty, too, of easing "mommy guilt" with a little indulgence, too ;o)
Poor Chloe! I hope she feels better very quickly. Don't feel guilty for not knowing about it sooner. I know from watching my sister with her kids that sometimes it's nearly impossible to get them to clearly communicate about what is going on with them. Aren't you so grateful that we have antibiotics? They'll whip her into shape in no time ;-)
We had experience with our little one and bubble baths leading to yst infections too. She just had to take sitz (sp?) baths to get rid of it. No fun! Hopefully she gets better soon!
Neither the girls or I have ever had a UTI. Were there signs other than the accidents that there was something wrong? Did she have a fever? Did she cry when she went potty?
And I know exactly what you mean about a little extra indulgence -- been there done that.
Poor Chloe:(. I know that you probably feel bad for not recognizing the signs sooner but how in the world would you have known?
I'm sure that you were thankful that God brought it to your minds when He did.
I think that girls are more prone to UTIs than boys are so we haven't had any issues with Michael. I have never experienced one personally but have heard about things that can trigger them - bubble baths being one of them.
Now you are able to look for the signs should it ever happen again - hopefully not! I can only imagine how "fun" it would be to retrieve a urine sample from a 2-1/2 year old little girl. At least Chloe cooperated enough with you to get one the "easy" way.
I use wipes with Michael and that seems to work better for him than T.P. He complains that it hurts his bottom. I have some coupons for "special" wipes but will have to price them to see if they are worth it. So far, the regular ones seem to do the trick.
I hope that the antibiotics and cranberry juice have done the trick. Have fun with your grandma!
