Tonight we were forced to start the binky break-up process. After a long, disappointing and messy day of potty-training and then a naptime strike with Chloe (Chloe won), I was more than ready for something positive in my mommy world. Matt took Chloe away for some errands to give me some quiet recuperation time. He insisted we have fishsticks and mac-and-cheese for dinner so I'd have no supper prep stress. Then he gave her a bath and she was exhausted by about 7:40 this evening. I was reading her a bedtime story when she dropped her beloved passy behind the bedrail. It must have been humorous to watch me in my huge pregnant state contorting myself to fish said passy out from behind the bed! I came up empty though and the passy fell irretrievably into a nook that is beyond both Matt and my reaches. So, the passy has been lost for good.
Thankfully we've started talking to Chloe about giving up her passy so she wasn't completely taken aback. But she wasn't happy either. Here was our conversation tonight . . . .
Chloe: Mommy, I want my passy please.
Me: It's lost Chloe, there's no more passy. You don't need it anymore because you're a big girl, remember?
Chloe: Mommy, I want another one passy please.
Me: But sweetheart, it's lost and we don't have any more passies.
Chloe: (after a pause) I not a big girl anymore.
Me: But you ARE a big girl, sweetie. You're so big that you don't need to use a passy to go night-night. Only babies need passies.
Chloe: (rubbing her eyes from exhaustion and having difficulty expressing herself) I . . . I want a birthday cake.
Me: Ok, I think it's time to pray together and go night-night. We'll pray that God helps you fall asleep without your passy.
After only 10 minutes of crying she's sleeping passy-free tonight! Yay! God is His providence kept her from napping so she'd be tired enough not to put up a big fight. Let's hope she deals well with this new transition. Matt was ready to run out to the drug store to buy another passy but I'm fine getting rid of it now. I've heard going cold-turkey and enduring the crying is the way to go. What do you all think?

As the mommy of a paci-addict, I have no authority on the matter. However, the cold-turkey plan is the one I intend to use in the next 6 months...sometime before Baby Bean arrives.
SO glad your poor pregnant self didn't have to deal with a terrible night-night ordeal. I hope the worst is over!
Yes it is gone - it is for babies, you can't get it! They understand you just have to keep remind them. If you give her another one you will just have to go through a new reason of "taking it away from her"
Next time I would suggest between 9 mo - 12 is the better time to break the tie :) Both of mine did it in less than a week at that age and they can't talk yet.
we're looking forward to the same trauma after the holidays when esther turns two and before her brother arrives. i hope it won't be too bad. in all honesty, it's my comfort as much as hers, because she goes to sleep so easily with it. she is only allowed to have it at bed/naps, so hopefully that will help. keep us posted on the progress. :)
I don't know about paci's - we have a thumb sucker at our house. :-) He has gotten out of the habit of sucking everywhere he goes, and now if he goes for it, that is a really good sign that he's sleepy. He seems to be weaning himself of his thumb in general, though. Oh that we would be so blessed. Michael & I both sucked our thumbs until age 8 (at bedtime)
Hallelujah for a good first night! Keep us posted on the transition!!
Great Job Alicia! Yeah we dreaded the day when we had to do it, but it only took one night without it and she wasn't addicted to having it anymore. I think we were more scared of the ordeal than it actually was.
that is almost exactly what happened to us on Friday! We lost the last one and told Ella she was a big girl. It's been a little rough, but once you've started just stick with it! Good job on doing it before the baby comes along!
My kids never took a paci and for that I am glad!! I am not against the paci...neither one of them liked it.
You are a brave mommy!! I am sure that the cold turkey is the way to go...good luck!!!
alicia, you are sucha good mom! i am sure it is tough to endure crying, but way to stick with it.
You go girl! It's so incredibly hard when that time does come, but oh the bliss of not having to deal with it after it's all said and done. I remember the stress of always having to remember that we had one and that we didn't lose it and the such, but it's so great once they forget they even loved it in the first place. Stick with it and in three or four days she'll be totally over it and on to bigger and better things to focus on! Praise the Lord for His perfect timing on everything!
She wants a cake, eh? How funny! I don't have any experience either, but now that she has gone one night without it I wouldn't revert back to using it. Good luck!
