Tomorrow we'll be hitting to road for an 8 1/2 hour drive to Wisconsin. Yikes!We plan to attend church, stay for lunch, and then hit the road. Hopefully the kids will take long afternoon naps in the car (Clive digs car movement). Then we'll stop for dinner and stretch our legs. The timing should work out nicely. Because predicting how road trips will go with two small children is always a breeze. :) Right.
Today we need to pack and do all the finalizing errands and tasks necessary for our two week absence. Packing is my number one priority today and it just struck me that I haven't planned any traveling diversions for Chloe yet. I usually like to get her some new books, cds, or toys to make the trip go by faster. But I haven't done any of that this time around!
That's why I need your help. Any one have any creative traveling tips for us? I so wish we had a portable dvd player . . .

Well, I'm thinking back to when we went on road trips growing up . . . I remember playing a type of Hide & Seek game with a piece of masking tape. My mom would hide the piece of tape somewhere in the car, while we closed our eyes, and then we would have to look for it. Also, if Chloe knows her alphabet, she could play the alphabet game. We would look for road signs/license plates and try to find the letters of the alphabet in order. Otherwise, Patch the Pirate CD's are great as are Paws & Tails. You may be able to download podcasts of these stories online from focusonthefamily.org. (I think the web address is correct.) If it's not, just google Focus on the Family.
Thanks for the ideas, Holly! We'll try the alphabet game and I just remembered that we have a set of jungle jam cds that we were saving for when chloe was older. she LOVES patch the pirate and i think she might be able to understand the story in jungle jam now.
We rely on the portable DVD player a lot, but we don't let Kayla use it all the time. She likes to play games that require her to find things out the window like "If anyone sees a green sign, say green sign. If anyone sees a W, say W. If anyone sees a Taco Bell, say Taco Bell." of course, we pick stuff that we see coming up so that she can find it which keeps her interested.
She also likes to color with her Aquadoodle pad. Don't know if you have one of those, but it's great because it's just water.
She also likes to interact with Krista. They sit next to each other Kayla facing front and Krista facing back so it's great for interaction. We'll tell her to tell Krista the animal sounds and go through the list of that. Kayla loves it when Krista laughs and gets a kick out of being entertained (and we say -- yeah, both are entertained at the same time). She also sings songs to Krista.
We also let her take a few of her Little People with her and she plays with them (and we love to hear her imagination), but the rule is that if she drops them, then that's the end until the next stop. Otherwise, it becomes a game that we don't want to encourage. :-)
Hope your trip goes well! Sounds like you're mentally prepared at least as much as you can be. Our last trip out to Wisconsin, I just wasn't mentally prepared enough and we let Kayla watch DVDs almost the whole way out. We drove 12 hours the first day (not drive time only but including stops) and 13 hours the second day. It was worth it, though, to get to see family.
Do you have a laptop? Our portable DVD player recently quit working so we've been using our laptop for our last few deputation meetings. We put it on a pillow down on the floor and the laptop on it at an angle where Kayla can see it.
